What is an E-mail virus?

Some spam e-mails are circulated with an attachment containing a virus. They usually have the subject line "Email account utilization warning" or "E-mail account disabling warning" and appear to be sent from the e-mail addresses "staff@advanceinsurance.com" or "noreply@advanceinsurance.com" NO SUCH E-MAIL ADDRESSES EXIST!

**PLEASE NOTE: These e-mail messages are NOT being sent by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. They are spam, and the attachment contains a virus. Do NOT open the attachment.** For your reference, a sample of the e-mail is below.

You should delete all spam messages without opening the attachments. The virus is only activated if you open the attachment. Spammers often appropriate or make up e-mail addresses based on real domains (i.e. advanceinsurance.com) to give their mass mailings a greater chance of being read.

This SPAM is the result of spammers harvesting both individual e-mail addresses as well as entire domain names (i.e. advanceinsurance.com) that pass over the Internet and sending mass mailings to any address that ends with that domain. THIS IS NOT DUE TO A BREACH OF SECURITY IN OUR ONLINE ACCESS. IT REMAINS COMPLETELY SECURE.

Lastly, it is best to have an anti-virus product of some kind on your PCs to avoid the activation or spread of a virus. Please be sure to keep your virus products up-to-date to avoid any problems with mailings such as these.
